How to have the best Valle de Guadalupe wine tasting weekend trip
Valle de Guadalupe, the premier wine region in Mexico, sometimes referred to as the “Napa Valley of Mexico”, is just across the California-Mexico border in Baja California’s and boasts over 100 wineries ranging from large-scale operations, to small family-run vineyards.
It also features a vibrant food scene that complements the range of wines available. Planning a great trip to Valle de Guadalupe would include great food and lots of wine tasting!
Where to stay
Valle de Guadalupe has a wide range of accommodation options including unique glamping style settings, bubble dome shape camping sites, gorgeous hacienda style hotels, and regular hotels. You’ll have a wide range of prices to choose from as well. You can also pick a hotel in Ensenada, opening up more food and hotel options. This is the option we chose, giving ourselves more freedome with our schedule, since we were comfortable driving around ourselves. Driving around this part of Mexico is not very different from driving around cities in the US and we were able to use navigation to get to all our destinations with no surprises!
Fish tacos in Ensenada
We chose to stay in Ensenada in order to see a little bit more of the area, and as we searched for the best food options, we came upon these two street stands (Tacos Corona & Tacos Fenix) that are renowned for having the best fish tacos in Baja California. And they did not disappoint! We have had fish tacos at both spots multiple times over various trips to the area, and they have been memorably delicious every time. Load them up with all the condiments they have on display, and you will not be disappointed!

Wineries – Decantos, El Cielo, Casa Frida
There are literally hundreds of wineries in the Valle de Guadalupe area, many different vibes and architectural styles. Here’s a few of the ones we have loved visiting.
Decantos Vinicola
Decantos Vinicola is a great blend of quality wine and striking architecture, with a signature giant palm sculpture on the front lawn. They offer tours of the cellar with descriptions of their wine making procedure that uses a unique gravity flow process. I won’t pretend to understand much about the wine making process, but I do enjoy a tour of all that it takes to get me my nice glass of vino.
You can choose from various tasting options or simply order a glass or bottle (and some food, too!) to enjoy on the terrace with magnificent views of the surrounding vineyards and Valle de Guadalupe. It’s one of the best spots for a relaxing afternoon with tasty wine, food and views.
We also spotted electric car chargers in the back of the winery, so if you’re worried about taking your fully electric car to Valle de Guadalupe, you may be in luck here!
El Cielo Vinicola
If you are looking for a more high-end experience that combines sophisticated wine, gourmet food, and activities—and you don’t mind a higher price point—El Cielo is an excellent fit. They offer traditional tours where you can learn about the wine making process, as well as wagon and golf cart tours, a fun experience riding through the vineyards while tasting and learning about their wines.
Their wines are a little on the pricier side for the region, but they are consistently high quality. They do offer tastings on the terrace, in the vineyard, and in the cave, which is a more affordable way to taste a lot of different wines, as opposed to purchasing bottles.
A really unique offering at El Cielo is the “make your own wine” experience with the guidance of their expert sommeliers. Check out their website to see their full array of offerings and make reservations for your activities.
Casa Frida
On the other end of the spectrum, Casa Frida is a more casual scene. It’s an fun destination that features a winery, a hotel, various restaurants, and bar spaces. It’s perfect if you are seeking a high-energy social scene, great photo opportunities, and a place that stays open later than many traditional tasting rooms. It hosts multiple dining concepts, ranging from formal restaurants to more casual bars, giving you several options for meals and drinks.
Casa Frida operates a dedicated winery area and several tasting rooms, such as the Frida Tasting Room and the Cava Chavela (a private, intimate cellar)
The photo opportunities at Casa Frida can make such great memories for your Valle de Guadalupe trip – between the grape vines (I sometimes call them wine plants hehe), by the angel wings, the painted vintage trucks, murals, etc. I only have a small selection here as I was focused on enjoying the day with my parents.
i-Petra restaurant
For a unique lunch stop, i-Petra restaurant is set on a mountainside with different seating spots nestled into the terrain, with beautiful relaxing views of the valley, a backdrop of large rocks and a huge flag of Mexico. It gets lively in the evenings, so it can also be a good late spot as well.
With unique food offerings (responsibly sourced!) and spectacular cocktails for all tastes, paired with delicious wines and beers from the area, a short stop to fill up on food and beautiful views between wine tastings is well spent at i-Petra.
Dinner at Fauna
This has definitely been the non-wine highlights of our trips to the area!
Fauna offers a next level culinary experience, using fresh local ingredients, it is widely considered the best dining experience in the Valle de Guadalupe area. And being a highly regarded restaurant, Fauna delivers with delicious dishes, every single one of them! We’ve been a few times, and taken family, and every dish was memorably tasty!
A couple of unique features here include the communal seating at long tables, and the outdoor “comal” where the fresh tortillas are made, as well as the open kitchen.
I highly recommend making a reservation for your visit to Fauna, as it fills up!
If you don’t have a reservation and can’t get in, your night is not ruined! You can eat great food and enjoy tasty cocktails at the Bruma wine garden, where the food and drinks are also really delicious! We enjoyed a really delicious pizza here, and a spicy pepper and lime cocktail as we waited for a really late last minute dinner at Fauna.
Wishing you a delicious visit to the Wine Valley! And while you’re passing through, check out some of the best food stops in Tijuana!
